A desert adventure two hours from Cairo: the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls, sandboarding and the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Whales.
Fayoum is a green oasis on the edge of the Western Desert, and at the heart of its protectorate lies Wadi El Rayan, with two lakes joined by Egypt’s only waterfalls. This is where the 4x4 adventure begins, among dunes and lakes.
The journey continues to Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where 40-million-year-old whale skeletons tell the story of whales’ evolution from land to sea, alongside a fossil and climate-change museum in the middle of the desert.
After a Bedouin lunch, try sandboarding from towering dunes and watch the sun set over Lake Rayan before returning to Cairo.
Day by day
Pick-up in Cairo and drive to Fayoum, switching to 4x4 vehicles at the protectorate entrance.
Explore the two lakes and the waterfalls, and climb Gebel El Medawara for a view over the protectorate.
Walk the marked trail among fossils and visit the fossil museum, with an accessible scientific explanation.
Lunch at a Bedouin camp, sandboarding and sunset before returning to Cairo around 20:30.
